Justice Duchess again.
In the 1750’s we did not have to contend with humans and their cell phones. In 1745, George Washington learned the basic elements of politeness and wrote the Rules of Civility. In the 4th Rule, George wrote: “In the presence of others, sing not to yourself with a humming noise; nor drum with your fingers or feet.” Richard had a conversation with George the other day and George updated Rule 4 to include “… nor should you converse with others on any cellular device.” Another example of his new addition includes: 111th: When partaking of victuals at any tavern or eatery, public or private, park your horse, your weapon, and your cellular device with the keeper at the door.
Commentary: Horses may smell and be disorderly; and weapons will, no doubt, cause women to fear and eat unbalanced. The cell phone has the same tendency to ruin the proper flow of digestive juices of the user and those within ears’ proximity.
So, when dining at the King’s Arms, please keep it in your packet.
He has many more, a few of which I shall relate to you on an “as needed” basis.
Justice Duchess
Schooners ALL ROUND UP for George!! Such foresight and wisdom hath he. Ye new cell can oft be an abomination in ANY environment, particularly in the clutch of a klutz!
Great observation Duchess!
Jeff
Justice Duchess,
Perhaps your (or George’s) wisest observation yet. Thanks for pointing out that a gentleman way back then had more common sense and consideration than most people today.
Duchess,
Oh this is wonderful news. We should all lobby for a re-issue of GW’s book. IMHO – There should be an additional chapter added about “parents” ignoring us while using what they’ve named their “devices.” I can hardly tear mine away sometimes, even when I REALLY need to go outside. Also, I see you are holding what is obviously a favorite read of yours. I’m assuming you have a First Edition, Original Copy, no doubt signed and dedicated to you. Ah, I’m jealous. My Dad is a theologian and he prefers a good sermon or discussion to write about in his blog. I don’t think he’s ever mentioned me even one time in his Country Parson column! ( http://www.stevenwoolley.com )You can read it if you like and let me know if you EVER see my name mentioned.
Luv,
Lily
Since I can travel in time, I can tell you I have a glimpse of you seeing your name in print in one of his columns soon. And don’t be surprised if there is a picture as well. Clearly you and I and our kindred “spirits” deserve a place in his work. C.D.
Ahhh, there’s the Richard I know.
