Fact Check: In 1760, repairs to the top of a structure in Colonial Williamsburg were called shingling. My job was to keep squirrels off during the shingling process. My post was next to the workers as a lookout. When  I saw a squirrel, I would ferociously bark at it – ruff ruff ruff. The workers referred my work as Ruffing. In 1771,  the word was popularized as Roofing. Colonial Duchess
